姑妈家 Gu Ma Jia 2019 Chinese New Year (CNY) Reunion Dinner

姑妈家 Gu Ma Jia is a Singapore Chinese restaurant set up to share delicious home-cooked goodness with her customers. Most veteran foodies would know the founder, affectionately known as Gu Ma 姑妈, who has more than three decades of cooking experience. In fact, Gu Ma Jia takes pride in their no MSG-added, less oil, less salt and less sugar in their dishes that she has won Singapore Food Master Award Top 10 and 3 respectively in 2016 and 2017.
Gu Ma Jia is no stranger to me as I have dined in the restaurant a couple of times, even brought my overseas friends to have an authentic taste of local goodness there.
We are now counting down to CNY, and I am so glad to be invited back for a food tasting for the 2019 CNY Reunion Dinner menu. Yup, the new year 2019 has arrived and we are just one month away from the Chinese New Year. It is time to book the restaurant for reunion dinner if you haven't done so.
Let me now walk you through some of the dishes we have tasted:
1. Prosperity Yu Sheng (Gui Fei Abalone) $40.80/$50.80
A CNY meal is not complete without Yu Sheng. Instead of using raw fish, Gu Ma Jia uses abalone slices for a change, so those who dislike the fishiness of raw fish might be glad to know. Overall, this dish didn't disappoint, it has a balance of zest, crunchiness, sweetness and savoury. Check out how much fun we had tossing the Yu Sheng:
2. Lobster Cold Platter $138
Heavenly and beautiful to feast on is this Special CNY Lobster Cold Platter. Gu Ma Jia only uses premium quality and fresh lobster (you can almost know the freshness of it upon the first bite of the lobster meat). It is served together with an exciting platter of delicious dishes like Smoked Duck, Mixed Sauce Pacific Clams and Gu Ma's special Beancurd. It serves to impress you the culinary skills of the chef.
2. Lychee Sweet & Sour Grouper (Market Rate)
You cannot miss this if you have kids on the dining table. The fish meat is painstakingly de-boned and deep-fried, so not only the kids, adults too will enjoy the crispy skin on the outside while sinking our teeth into the soft, fresh and tender grouper fish meat. It has the complete burst of sweet and sour flavours to whet our appetite!
3. Kyoto Pork Ribs $20
The tender pork ribs are served in aluminum foil to retain the juiciness and natural flavours of the ribs. Drenched in a tangy sauce, the dish is sweet and savoury at the same time. It is absolutely an exquisitely delectable dish!
4. Award Winning Assam Fish Head
This signature dish is a hot favourite among regulars and is a must-try for new customers. The fish heads are carefully selected daily, so freshness is guaranteed. The fish is tender and juicy, complemented by Gu Ma Jia's exclusive spicy and sour Assam Blend gravy. The Assam gravy is light, not over-powering, so it accentuates the freshness of the fish. No one has ever regretted ordering this.
5. Claypot Wine Chicken with Ginger and Sesame Oil $15/$22/$30
This is a nutritious pot of tender chicken with fragrant ginger and sesame oil that will tantalize both adults (especially ladies) and children. The chicken meat is so tender that makes me so unforgetable. It does remind us, ladies, of our confinement food, which we all love.
6. Yuan Yang Kai Lan $12/$18/$24
This dish features Kai Lan vegetables cooked in two styles, blanched and fried. Crispy Kai Lan leaves are deep-fried to perfection, coupled with thick and crunchy Kai Lan stems. The fried crispy tasty leaves are a huge hit, even kids who reject vegetable might even give it a try.
7. Double-boiled Beautifying Peach Gum with Red Dates $32.80
Awww... ... a new delicacy to beautify and nourish our skin. Ladies, who want this? Gu Ma Jia has made this healthy dessert with less sugar and free from preservatives, how wonderful! Peach gum is an edible resin that is exuded from the bark of the peach tree. It contains plant collagen for firmer skin and makes wrinkles less visible. It also helps to rejuvenate skin, cleanse the blood, boost immunity, lower cholesterol and balancing the pH levels in our bodies.
