The Only Stop In Asia - Disney Aladdin

[Media Review]

In the past week, you may have seen in various social media platforms that celebrities, social media influencers and people from the media industry raving about this musical playing now at Sands Theatre at Marina Bay Sands until 1 September.  All these are legit, Aladdin is really THAT good and here I am, echoing and concurring what they have said.

This production was opened in Sydney in 2016 and has travelled to Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Auckland and now its first, only and final stop in Asia, Singapore. To cut the long story short, here are some of the highlights of the show:

The Lavish Glitter on the Stage

Boosting the most lavish sets and spectacular costumes ever to be seen on Sands Theatre stage, a staggering 337 glittering costumes with almost 500,000 Swarovski crystals.  More than 30 units of 40-foot sea containers are used to ship the props and costumes over to recreate the fantasy city of Agrabah, including the colourful marketplace, the lush palace of the Sultan and his princess daughter Jasmin, and the legendary Cave of Wonders. By the way, 120 pieces of gold have come together to form the cave of Wonders in this production. It is absolutely extravagant.

The Main Casts

Gareth Jacobs who acts as the Genie has awed me with his incredible stamina. He has the longest single scene on speaking, singing, and dancing and I could barely hear (and see) him panting. Awesome acting skills he has, he took the stage under his command easily with his charisma and was able to influence all his co-performers on stage with his chemistry. The man (I meant, this Genie) is the soul and anchor of the show. Two thumbs up for him!

Shubsri Kandiah is as pretty as a princess in real life and this role as Princess Jasmine suits her to a tee. Independent and elegant, as the role calls for, Shubsri was able to project that image flawlessly. And with her mesmerising vocal, she could easily bring you into her world, a whole new world.

Graeme Isaako has an impressive theatre experience and his cheeky face suits the role of Aladdin very well. He has great chemistry with his buddy Genie on stage. Be watchful on the pair when they are both on stage and you'll understand what I mean.

The Magic
The majestic Cave of Wonders that is made from 120 pieces of gold is certainly a heavyweight in the show. Nothing short of magnificent and gorgeous, totally breathtaking, it just set the stage so well.

And no, the production team isn't going to disclose how the Magic Carpet flies, but it really did fly against the twinkling sky. I found myself staring hard trying to spot any strings or planks that might carry the magic carpet up, but I couldn't spot any. That scene, alongside with the song 'A Whole New World, sang by Princess Jasmine and Aladdin, created that mysterious Disney moment that you'll want it to last forever.
