Symphony 92.4 fm - Young Talents Project 2013 Gala Concert

Tonight was the night that AJ was most excited about.  Yes, he was at MediaCorp playing Sonatina Op. 36 No. 3. 1st Movement by Clementi for the Young Talents Project 2013 Gala Concert.  In the past weeks, he has been busy polishing up the piece in order to put up his best in this show.

We were there since late afternoon for the rehearsal.  Here are some photos I took.

They've got his age printed wrongly on the programme sheet. He is 6; not 9

This is AJ's live performance at the Concert Gala:

The winner of the Grand Finalist is Nikolai Song, the flutist.  He has won him at trip to Vienna, Austria for masterclasses with Nobel Talent School of Music.  Congratulations to him!

Beat Boredom With These 5 Musical Instruments

I can smell boredom.  It is easier to keep adults home bound.  They can watch DVDs, snuggle on the bed, read, etc.  But for kids, this is kind of tough.

The boy has been locked up at home since Fri 21 June.  He was complaining this morning that he could not even get out of the house for a meal.  To play safe, we rather have boredom than illness.

So we dug out those archives to entertain him as we did not want the goggle box to keep him entertained.

Here are 5 musical instruments that have kept the boy entertained thus far:

(1) The Yamaha U30 Piano

(2) The Ukulele

(3) The Guitar

(4) The Harmonica

(5) The Recorder

This is a short clip of the father & son duet of Oh! Susanna.  They took about an hour to practise. The accompaniment part, which was played by the father, was rearranged by AJ.

Daily Vacation Bible School June 2013

The Daily Vacation Bible School (DVBS)2013 has come to an end today.  AJ has enjoyed it so much that he kept singing the theme song since Day 1 of the DVBS.

This year, the DVBS was cut short by a day, from the usual 3 days to 2 days.  But God's Word was still taught accordingly & faithfully.

Beside having lessons on Redeeming the Time (Ephesians 5:16), the children also had art & craft (the clock), games & a presentation on the last day for their parents.  Here are the snap shots:

Away from the hustle and bustle of city life, we had our DVBS at Aloha Changi

To be exact, we were at Aloha Changi, Changi Cottage
We were greeted by this Giant Orb Weaver Spider (my friend told me).  Look at its nicely knitted web!

This was the bungalow we 'stayed' in for the last 2 days
It came with a BBQ pit which we did not have the chance to use

A gorgeous coastal view to greet you everyday

And the children had fun playing ball game & bubbles!

Not forgetting a group photo!

The art & craft is a real working clock!

Thank you to the DVBS committee, the teachers, the helpers & the parents who had made this session a wonderful one for the children.   Thank God for your labour of love!

The song presentations by the Pre-schoolers & the Primary School goers are here:

A Suitable Study Desk

I am very particular about study desk & chair, whether it is for myself or AJ.  I will get back ache if the height of chair or desk  is not suitable for me.  So, when it comes to hunting study desk & chair for AJ, I am not lax.  I do not like kids to sit on chairs with dangling feet.  This means that the height of the table & chair are not right for them.  This will affect their sitting posture, & of course, they will slouch & eventually have their chins rest on the table.

I would love to have this kind of study desk for him! The set comes with adjustable height for both desk & chair to cater for growing child.  & the back cushion is ergonomically designed! But I also know that my pocket is not deep enough to own them.

Kids being kids, what if one day he tells me that he does not like this kind of study desk any more & refuses to sit on it?  That would mean a couple of hundreds just go down the drain!

I was eager to get one that suit AJ's height & easy on my pocket.  After some 'googling' & asking around, I found this range from ikea.

Source: ikea
This range is good because the desk height is adjustable - from 48cm to 60cm.  It suits children of about Nursery 2 to Kindergarten 2, maybe even Primary 1.  But I find that 60cm is a tad too short for AJ.  It cannot last him for the next 2-3 years.  So I continued my search.

I have been wondering where those kindergartens & primary schools get their tables & chairs.  I love their heights & their durability.  Then I found this company that sells furniture to schools!  I called them to check if they sell to walk-in customers & was glad to know that they do!  I made a trip to Changi South Industrial Park & selected what I deem fit for AJ.

My friends teased me when they saw this.  They asked if I was preparing him for Primary 1 since they were exactly what were used in school (I bought this in Dec 2012).  It did not cross my mind though.  I bought them because the height of the desk & chair were ideal for Primary school kids & the price of both items cost me less than $60!

You see, I want to make sure that when AJ sits out to write, his legs are firmly on the floor.  This will give him the support he needs to maintain a good posture.  The table height is 65cm, suitable for Primary 3 level.  But AJ was 118cm then so I thought he would outgrow a shorter table quite quickly thus I settled for a slightly higher one.  The height of the chair is 40cm.

Should AJ decide to lean back to read, he can still feel the floor.  His feet do not dangle.  In this picture, he was tip toeing because it was taken in Dec 2012. Now that he has grown to 121cm in a span of 6 months, his feet can rest firmly on the floor even when leaning back.

We are pretty happy with this purchase as it has served AJ well.  He is comfortable with this set of study desk & chair too.  Until he outgrows this set, my search stops here.

[Review] Origins Nail Spa

I do not go for manicure or pedicure unless there is an important occasion for me to attend like wedding lunch/dinner, graduation ceremony, etc.  These days, I usually get birthday party invitations instead (you know why).

When Origins Nail Spa offered me their Signature treatment which consists of a Classic Manicure + a Classic Pedicure + a choice of 100% natural ingredients Scrub & Mask, I was more than happy to take up the offer.

So when the father took leave to accompany AJ who is on school holiday, the mummy here went to pamper herself.

The Origins Nail Spa is located at Bukit Batok Central, walking distance from Bukit Batok MRT station.  It was not difficult to locate the outlet with the help of GPS.

I was greeted by 2 friendly manicurists - Yan & Ing, whom I could quickly stroke a conversation with.  They were well trained to answer my questions & were pretty experience with their profession.

Here's the pictorial illustration of my treatment in Origins Nail Spa:

My hands were first soaked into a bowl of lukewarm water, then pat dry.  Traces of nail polish were removed & then an emery board was used to gently file my nails.  I did not trim my nails further as they were short.  Then cuticle softener was applied & my hands were once again soaked.  After a while, the manicurist used the cuticle pusher to push back my cuticles gently.

& there came the Coffee Scrub & Mask which I opt for.  They only did the arms, how I wish they do the hands as well! You could see from the picture above that my arm was wrapped.  The manicurist explained that the wrapped up will help the mask to work better on the skin.

Before & After
Similar procedures were applied to my happy legs/feet.

Symphony 92.4 fm - Young Talents Project 2013

AJ participated in the Symphony 92.4 fm - Young Talents Project 2012 but he did not get in into the Final.

This year he participated again.  This was the song we sent in for audition (Valse by Chopin).

He got in into the Final this year & was playing live on 26 May 2013.

There were 153 contestants playing piano, string instruments, wood wind instruments, percussion instruments, as well as singing.  Out of these 153 contestants, only 10 were selected to the Grand Final.

AJ did not make it to the Grand Final.  We were glad that he was not disappointed.  All along we have been stressing to him it is not important to win, although it is nice to win.  Most importantly, he enjoyed the process of it & he put in his best effort in practising as well as performing.

Though he did not make it to the top 10, he made it to the top 20.  Today, we went to Media Corp to attend the party & he was awarded Certificate of Excellence by the VP of 92.4 fm.

& we were overjoyed to receive another piece of good news.  While the top 10 get to compete in the Grand Final on 28 June, 4 out of the balance 10 get to play/sing their pieces in the Gala as well.  & AJ is 1 of the 4!  The 4 are: 2 pianists, 1 violinist & 1 vocalist.

The 19 were here (1 absent)
So we, with his piano teacher, will be attending the Young Talents Project 2013 Gala on 28 June.  This entire programme will be broadcast in July or August via Okto channel.

AJ is very happy that he gets this chance to perform in this Gala.  Surely it serves as a motivation to him.  We hope that such motivation will spur him to want to excel in music further.
