Dick Lee's SINGAPOPERA

I grew up in a Mandarin/Hokkien speaking environment. Ask me any pop songs in the 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s, I could probably sing a few stanzas still. I have only exposed to Classical music when AJ started developing his musical talent at 3. Slowly, besides some well-known classical pieces, I got to know some Jazz and Blues because AJ likes to play them.

As he grows older, his repertoire expands and he is now into some Chinese songs and songs composed by local composers. Of all local composers, one of his favourites is Dick Lee.

Under the influence of AJ, I slowly learn about the music culture and history in Singapore. Singapore, being a young nation, doesn't have a deep and rich music culture and history. But, much thanks to our local pioneer musicians, their passion and their perseverance, the art, theatre and music industry has blossomed. Without the hard work of these pioneers, we would probably not be able to enjoy these varieties of entertainment.

I had the privilege to enjoy Dick Lee's SINGAPOPERA with some like-minded mom bloggers on Saturday. It was a record of the best of all his composed songs from his well-known musicals, in celebration of Beauty World’s 30th Anniversary and Snow Wolf Lake’s 20th Anniversary. It featured songs that, we, Singaporeans resonate with from musicals such as Fried Rice Paradise, Beauty World, Forbidden City, Sing to The Dawn, Nagraland and Snow Wolf Lake.

Songs like 爱是永恒 from Snow Wolf Lake, When All The Tears Have Dried from Sing to the Dawn and Bunga Sayang from Kampong Amber are some of my favourites.

Performing together with Dick Lee were well-loved personalities in the theatre scene namely Alemay Fernandez, Sebastian Tan, Denise Tan, Dwayne Lau, Frances Lee, Benjamin Chowand and Cheryl Tan.  The Musical Director for this was Indra Ismail.
If you do not wish to miss any of Dick Lee's concert like ‘SINGAPOPERA’ in the future, go 'like' his Facebook Page and follow him on Instagram.
