Math Olympiad Training In The Math Classroom
[Advertorial]
Math Olympiad (MO) was alien to us until AJ went to Primary 4. It was then he was sent to NUS High for a Math Olympiad competition. We didn't coach him and we didn't engage any external help too. He went to the MO battlefield not properly armed and was brutally slaughtered. It was then we realised no one should go into this battlefield un-coached.
The MO questions are pinched a few knots higher than GEP Math, and is certainly not meant for anyone. If a child is already struggling with mainstream Math syllabus, then MO is definitely not for him/her.
We decided we should, at least, engage a private tutor to coach AJ on MO questions so that he wouldn't be taken for a surprise again when he was invited to participate in another round of MO competition at Primary 5. This time, we were a little more prepared but we still lacked information.
He did better at Primary 5, from Honourable Mention in P4 to Silver Award in P5. We later found out that one of his schoolmates has been going to The Math Classroom for training, so we thought that it might be good to send AJ there too as he will have a companion. When he was enrolled for more rounds of MO competition, we sent him to The Math Classroom beginning of this year (P6).
It has been quite an amazing journey since. In a short of 3 months, AJ scored a Gold in the first MO competition he took this year. And he continued scoring Gold, one competition after another. We don't know what The Math Classroom has done, but I'm sure his coach Mr. Tong must have gotten the key to unleashing AJ's potential!
In fact, The Math Classroom has a bumper crop this year. Just look at the stellar achievements of its students:
Singapore and Asian Schools Math Olympiad (SASMO) - 28 Golds, 10 Silvers and 9 Bronzes
Singapore Math Kangaroo Contest (SMKC) - 12 Golds, 4 Silvers and 8 Bronzes
Singapore Mathematical Olympiad for Primary School (SMOPS) - 1 Platinum, 3 Golds, 4 Silvers, 7 Bronzes
Raffles Institution Primary Mathematics World Contest (RIPMWC) - 1 High Distinction and 3 Distinctions
We are so glad that we have found The Math Classroom this crucial year, as AJ is doing PSLE this year. The Gold awards from the MO competitions came in handy for his Direct School Admission (DSA) this year, more so, when he is only eyeing on one particular Secondary School. Certainly, it would be great if we have sent him to The Math Classroom when he was P4. However, we were ignorant then.
If your child has a strong interest in Math and is good at it, it may be worthy to consider sending him/her for MO training early. So far, I haven't come across anyone who can excel in MO without coaching. Just as an athlete who competes at the national level (or even inter-school level), is not without a competent coach. Playing a sport at the national/inter-school level is not the same as a physical education lesson one attends in school. In the same light, competing in MO is not the same as studying Math subject in school. One needs to be coached for in-depth understanding.
Recently, I was invited for an interview on why we signed AJ up for MO classes and why The Math Classroom. Here's for your reading:
The Math Classroom is giving away one hour of free trial to all students who might be interested in their Math programmes. After the trial, should you decide to sign your child up for any of their Math programmes, simply quote 'Mylilbookworm' to enjoy 10% off the first term fee (valid till 31 Dec 2018).
