[Review] Sherlock Sam & the Missing Heirloom in Katong

This is a monthly post on 'Book or Web/Mobile Application for Children'. Every 3rd week of the month I will post on a review on books that AJ has read or web/mobile application that he has tried on.

This was the book that AJ got hooked on recently.

He finished reading this in just 2 sittings:  1 after dinner, before bedtime (about 1.5 hours), & another during breakfast & after breakfast (about 2 hours).  He was glued to it, could not be detached from it even during breakfast. Haiz.

I decided to read it after he has finished it.  Then I understood why it was so captivating

(1) Simple English with minimum bombastic words
AJ hardly came to us to check on new words other than 1, which is 'heirloom'.  When I read it, I realised that the book has hardly any difficult words.  I think a 5 YO avid reader can read this book without much difficulty.  In general, it suits 6-8 YO well.

(2) Interesting content
Solving a case is always interesting to an inquisitive mind.  The way the authors led the flow was very captivating.  This makes it hard to put down the book.

(3) Localised content which residents in Singapore can easily associate with
There is a strong Singapore & Peranakan flavour in this book.  Children are exposed to some Singlish & many Peranakan terms here.  There is a glossary attached at the end of the book to explain the terms, so no worries if you parents don't know what is 'Gong Cho'.  :)

Here's the little boy's short review of this book:

These 3 others books have been shortlisted.  He has almost finished reading them all.  Sherlock Sam, when is your new book coming?  The little boy here can't wait!
